Saw Oblivion yesterday evening with Buck, a sort of Mother’s Day treat that I came up with the idea of yesterday afternoon. Tom Cruise‘s performance, though I wouldn’t say it was wooden, never really varied much. I suppose that in a way, that’s the perfect thing for an action movie actor. The things, after all, are not written to have much emotional depth in the main characters. Of course, Robert Downey, Jr. manages to have a lot of emotional depth in the latest Iron Man III movie. He has a good fair bit also in the first of the series. I have decided that in order to maintain his ageless good looks with whatever treatments that truly expert plastic surgery and skin treatments etcetera that Tom Cruise has had, it comes at the cost of displaying little emotion on the screen. Buck agreed with me when I told him my theory of this as we walked from the elevator to our front door. He had not thought of it this way before, but he quite agreed with me.

So, I went to the imdb.com site and gave the thing three stars. I almost never give a movie a rating this low. I felt it was sort of morally imperative of me to do such a thing. He is just there in his movie, running or fighting as necessary. I don’t think I could say that he is phoning it in, he is only an action figure.
