High school flashback

Latin class. Grades 7 through 9, with Mr. B, who (we believed at the time) had gotten thrown out of the Jesuits for being too mean.

Ah those were the days… two rows of our class’s best and brightest. I sat in the front row. Janet hid back in the corner by the pencil sharpener.

What were the classes like? Rigorous. Much shouting, though, at times. Objects got thrown through the air quite a number of times, targeted at various of us.

And hey, that was just the teacher! (We students were very well-behaved.)

  1. I don’t know about you, Patti, but I REALLY learned Latin in that class. I also cried and threw up a lot.

Maybe I had to face some inner demons and that’s what led me to keep going in classics. I did abandon Latin eventually to do concentrate in archaeology in graduate school I found I was more comfortable with things more than words.

  2. I remember lots of fear. I also learned a lot, and can still do that Cicero quotation from memory. Unfortunately, I am surrounded by people who don’t want to hear it!

I also treasure the memory of our English teacher pouring her lunchtime carton of milk over Mr. B’s head.

Memories are starting to come back now. Maybe I’ve lost my ability to repress.

  3. omigod, how could I forget about the milk! I wonder what their next conversation was like? The gray cells are getting a workout this week.

I was over at HUC doing research a few weeks ago and remembered Mr Dorrance trying to get us to appreciate a lecture series there by Sir Steven Runciman. He even got us a private audience with the great Byzantinist. I appreciate it now, Mr D!!! Can you hear me?
