Scent and memory

Every evening, my father used to make these, one for him, one for mom. She didn’t used to drink, before they married, but he taught her. A non-drinking wife would be too embarrassing.

The smell of adulthood:

  • 1 and 1/2 jiggers of Kentucky Bourbon (Virgin Bourbon preferred)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • water as desirable
  • ice: much

Pour the bourbon into a toddy glass (which is squat and wide). Stir in the sugar with a few vigorous swirls which are nevertheless not enough to make the whole teaspoon dissolve. Add enough ice to reach the top of the glass. Pour in enough water to reach near the top, sort of. Twist the lemon peel over the glass and drop it in.

Serve immediately and cold.
Serve cold and immediately.

Ice itself has a scent. Did you know that?

Did you know that before now?
