Tonight's reading

I’m about to help my son with his homework, since he has a learning disability and can’t read very fast. I love my son and I love helping him with his homework. Unfortunately, it’s for a history seminar I’m starting to think of as “Jew-haters and How They Grew”: it’s focusing on Hitler and Stalin.

We’re not just talking the regular stuff people usually learn about them. I learn trivia like how young Josef Dzhugashvili got 45 of his fellow seminary students expelled on charges of having anti-government propaganda in their possession, how he planted the pamphlets in their stuff, and who the printer was (he’d had the batch made up special, just to frame them). I learn hour by hour the timeline for Hitler’s beer-hall putsch, and the behind-the-scenes wrangling between the court and the prosecutor’s office over whether he’d get parole.

Not that it’s not interesting… it’s just nerve-wracking. I’m going to go let the dog out now, since she’s whining at me, and find out where I put the bottle of antacids.
