Via Rox Populi : Torture Begins at Home
Alt Hippo points to a new twist on an old parenting tool. This newfangled “rod” is made of nylon and is manufactured at a company that also produces whips. I’ll let the sales brochure speak for itself:
* Try the rod out on yourself ahead of time to determine how much force you should use to get the result you desire.
* Chasten for the child’s benefit; not for you convenience.
* View the use of the rod as chastening to promote godliness [sic] rather than punishment for failure.
* Examine your heart:Are you disciplining in love?
Always avoid using the rod while angry.
Are you demonstrating the qualities in your life that you are trying to instill in your child?* Explain to the child what is expected of him in advance.
There’s more, of course. Like any brochure, it includes a list of features and benefits. I’m especially fond of the “Benefits for Children” section:
* Promotes a loving atmosphere in the home
* Teaches responsible behavior
* Removes guilt and foolishness from their hearts
* Develops self-control
* Better atmosphere for learning
* Helps children receive wisdom
