Something to make you want to cry

The Christian Paradox (Harpers.org):

Here is a statistic that does matter: Three quarters of Americans believe the Bible teaches that “God helps those who help themselves.” That is, three out of four Americans believe that this uber-American idea, a notion at the core of our current individualist politics and culture, which was in fact uttered by Ben Franklin, actually appears in Holy Scripture.

Emphasis mine.

  1. Hi, I came by via Eric’s site. The study was originally done by Barna Research. See article here. It also found that a majority of Americans also believed that the Holy Spirit is not a real entity but is just a symbol of God’s presence or power and that Satan is not a real being but is just a symbol of evil. Pretty scary stuff.

  2. in response to mis_nomer,

Am i wrong, or is most of the bible open to interpretation?
There is no one right way to interpret the writing in the holy book, we don’t know exactly how the authors of the bible wanted us to interpret their messages. Maybe Satan isn’t a real being, we can only be sure of the parts of the bible that give us clear messages that cannot be confused.

Just consider it for a second or two, it’s a highly debatable topic.
