The most American notion: that the main aim of life is to be adequately entertained; everything else serves that purpose.
Even if there is not a show on that I enjoy, I still watch the screen. Instead of looking for reasons to turn it off, I should be looking for reasons to turn it on. Shakespeare’s not that difficult, especially when you find out where he hid the dirty jokes, but his book sits neglected on the television set.
Something Thoreau said, about “finding out I hadn’t lived” at the end of life. Time to think about that now.
