A good life

Afterlife in Judaism

After death, there is only a spiritual (not a physical) world, according to Judaism. Our bodies turn to dust, but our soul (neshama in Hebrew) is eternal. If we lived a good life, we are rewarded with a spiritual closeness…

But what is a good life? Everyone yesterday evening at the visitation said that Mom had lived one. Well, it was a life. Would she know spiritual closeness, if she came across it? Self-satisfied, vain, childlike, with a deep need to make the world revolve around her.

But of course, a funeral is not the time to go into all that.

Today we have her mass. Yes, I’m converting to Judaism, but she didn’t know that. Would have exploded. Stepsister Sue can take communion, not me — she’s catholic enough for the both of us, and then some.
