This is an island called Kerguelen. It’s a French possession, with a scientific base established on it – no town. It lies in the southern Indian Ocean, and is about as far from civilization as you can get, including the South Pole. The closes town of any sort is about 2,500 miles away.
It’s so far from anything, in fact, that it has evolved many of its own species. It’s too far from other land masses to have had plant seeds transported in any way, so its “tree niche” is inhabited by descendants of the cabbage family.
I have great desires to go there now, and pat the puffins and watch the cabbages grow. Oh, how a broken ankle doth drive me to distraction!
