So Arafat is sick, probably dying. Besides thinking “Yay!” I am also thinking that it is the best way for him to go: dying of an illness rather than from any war or assassination.
Why? Well, this is probably more painful. But, even more important, no Palestinian can blame Israel for this. There can be no outburst of attacks and bombings if he dies in his bed of whatever it is that he has. Well, yes, there can be, but the usual anger will sound quite half-assed.
Israel also will be able to say, “Look, we had ample reason to kill him, but we didn’t. He had no reason to kill our people, but he did. See the difference?”
