Woodpeckers

Ephemera

Had the window open last night — I wake to a hairy woodpecker drumming for breakfast and a mate, with an undercurrent of chatter from assorted sparrows and warblers. The beat is provided by the bass of my son’s stereo as he tries to wake up for school.

I like waking up early; I should do it more often.

  3. Not long ago, we had a woodpecker – the big red-headed kind we don’t often see – fight itself in our window. He damaged the trim around some windows, broke some of the plastic-thingy that keeps the glass in place. And now we have a female cardinal fighting herself in the window. Maybe it’s the same one that did so all last year, I don’t know. But she does it every day, for hours, starting a sunrise.
