Revenge. Family.

Yes I saw The Movie today, and it was good, but lots of other people blog this already and you don’t need me to go on about it.

I’ve got something else on my mind, though: revenge.

Well, doesn’t that sound movie-like? Sure does. It’s also my life.

You see, almost twenty years ago, my cousin’s husband stole from me, and my mother. Stole a lot.

No, it wasn’t a mistake, or a misunderstanding, or some kind of missed communications. No, it wasn’t just him taking a quick loan of a few thousand to pay urgent bills, and he was going to put it right back — the usual rationalization of the amateur embezzler. It wasn’t financial laxity or ineptitude.

He intended to steal from us after Dad died. He succeeded.

Then I succeeded in stopping him, and having his license to practice law revoked. Then the stock market was very, very good to me and I recovered quite nicely.

Where was my family in all this? I’ll tell you: It was gathered around my cousin, picturesquely in tears, and her husband, offering them their deepest support. They stayed away from me, so as not to “appear to take sides.”

I learned a lot from this, more than they know, which is a lot. And I learned what “blood family” means, which is (in my case, at least) nothing.

Flash forward to now…

Another cousin’s husband calls up my husband, makes an appointment today, “to talk.”

He and my cousin are out of money. Lots of money. They need $55,000, and right away. (Note: no, I’m not the first they asked — they’ve been through everyone else already.)

Buck called me after giving the wastrel a tentative “no.” The answer I wished my husband to convey to my cousin:

I look forward to watching you twist in the wind. I give you all the help you gave me.

I hung up and watched a movie that was just starting, with lots of lightsabers in it.

Buck didn’t quite give that exact answer, but a definite negative was conveyed.

But to all my cousins on my father’s side, here’s a message to you:

I look forward to watching you twist in the wind. I give you all the help you gave me.
