I hate spammers even more

Frantic early-morning call to hosting service (GoDaddy.com — they’re wonderful, and very understanding). From what my inbox looked like this morning, and the past couple of mornings, I think a spammer has gotten ahold of my domain’s email for his nefarious purposes. Getting a lot of “Mail Delivery Failure” types of notifications for nonsense users.

Yeah, I know that it’s a tactic of some spammers to disguise their messages as artificial messages of that type. However, these messages lately, on further perusal, are different. Too many of them all at once, and the last straw was a notification from my domain’s own mailserver.

So, I now have no email address at my blog domain. None whatever. I do not spam, and I hate spammers to an incredible degree.

Y’all can find me through the email on the sidebar.

  1. UGH.

I once recived over 1500 mail bounce messages overnight. It appears the sender forges your e-mail address in the From: field, so if there is a problem with the message, it comes back to you.

It still happens from time to time, and I see it as part of the cost of being online. But the very first time it happened to me, I must have spent hours trying to find the identity thief.

So, I feel for you, but don’t let that stop you from posting an email address. If it’s someone who wants to e-mailbomb you, he’ll get your email address somewhere.

  2. I started using the spam service from postini.com on my business email account a few years ago, and it works really, really well. Not sure what they have going for personal accounts though.

  3. That’s what I thought at first, Ruben. What worried me was the error message from GoDaddy’s mail server, which a spammer wouldn’t know the name of. I think it could only have been done if my acct had been used to generate the messages as well.
