May be obvious to some, but this occurred to me (perhaps late) a year or so ago. Real politics — the way most feel and experience politics — is less about “issues” than it is about social-group tribalism.

And I don’t think there’s a huge difference between liberals and conservatives on the basics of this.

I first registered as a Republican, even though I wanted to be a Democrat, because my mother was standing next to me at the table at the poll. After she died, I did become an official Democrat because, well, I could. And she was no longer there to be freaked by it.

But now, back in the Republican fold. Because I actually thought about the issues.
