Several years ago, more than ten, my son was a teenager and one evening after dinner, he and I and our very young dog were in the kitchen. He and the dog were horsing around on the floor while he and I were talking about whatnot.
I watched them in silence for a few seconds, feeling at the peak of perfection. I thought to myself, remember this scene well — remember that at the moment when you did have it all, that you knew that you did.
I go back to that memory like a touchstone now, out of habit.
