For years, I’ve struggled to define my path. People ask what I “do” for a living, and it’s difficult to give them a specific title. Writer? Entrepreneur? Geek? They just don’t work, because I’ve always done things differently.
from [Chris Pirillo]
That’s a lot like my own dilemma when people ask me what I do. I’ve studied math, computer science, French, English, Hebrew, modern and contemporary British and American poetry, geology, paleontology. In various forms and places, for various and sundry reasons. I’ve met the man who invented Play Doh and the man whose quartet got the first gold record in jazz, and been kissed on the lips by my favorite author. Now, I am learning to be executive producer of a television series. I am older than Chris, but I still haven’t figured out what to say when asked what I do. Perhaps, along with the question, it’s an American dilemma.
Everywhere else, people are more interested in who you are.
