Most of the new bloggers I see are trying to be ever-more-reactionary versions of Instapundit or some such place. I was going to write about that, but of course, VodkaPundit got there ahead of me, and did it so much better:
Doctrinaire libertarianism boils down to: I want the world my way, I want it now, and who cares if 5,000 years of human history are against me.
Progress is a slow, uneven affair. It’s also prone to repeated failures. The self-titled “realist” who’s willing to admit that progress is measured by two-steps-forward-and-one-step-back, is in reality the most dangerous sort of optimist. Humanity’s march towards freedom has never, with rare and fleeting exceptions, been that orderly or that quick.
Humanity is lucky to get 100 steps forward for every 99 steps back – and mostly we just travel sideways.
Maybe someday we’ll live in a perfect libertarian world, where we drop tokens in the meter to walk on the privatized sidewalks to sell legal heroin to a tax-exempt hooker. But I’m not holding my breath.
So maybe I’ll just quit looking at new political blogs.
