Why we still have to fight

And on so many fronts, too. It’s easy, in these “enlightened” times, for an American woman to lean back and put her feet up and relax and say, “I don’t have to be a feminist. There’s no more need for it.”

Well, the fight isn’t over. In some places, it’s still only beginning. And our attempts at fighting the barbarism displayed below are being carried out, not by the liberal Democrats, but by the allegedly illiberal Republicans. Go figure.

Last Thursday, two men rode on a motorcycle to a grade school in Southern Afghanistan. After forcing their way into Mr. Laghmani’s classroom, the Taliban insurgents dragged the teacher from his students to the school gate and executed him for the crime of teaching girls.

Despite the ongoing threats, intimidation, and murder, teachers like Laghmani risk their lives each day to teach the six million boys and girls who now attend Afghan schools. Their ongoing efforts in this global fight are no less heroic than our own.

Because education is the key to democracy and freedom, theocrats outlaw education for girls for the same reason that Democrats outlawed education for slaves both before and after the Civil War.
