How to celebrate

The proper way to celebrate a favorite song or artist? Well, let me give you a bit of backstory, as they call it in LA…

When I was in college in Nashville, I was surrounded by music, as you might guess. I came away with (only?) one song that haunted me. Actually, I fell in love with many songs and artists, but all of them were easily found and followed. Except the one.

(Remember, this was a couple of decades before Napster.)

Which one? Hoyt Axton, Lion in the Winter. It was running through my head yesterday, and I remembered all over again how much I love it. I wanted to post some sort of commendation for the song, or its writer. Something. But I have no idea when Hoyt Axton‘s birthday or deathday is. I could look it up, but didn’t particularly feel like it.

End of backstory. (Yay!)

Why do we have to wait till birthdays or deathdays to commemorate someone? Lion in the Winter is a wonderful song… Any day I remember it is worth commemorating. Therefore, I declare now to be officially Lion in the Winter Day!

Lion in the Winter,
by Hoyt Axton

Like a lion in the winter, I can hear the summer call
Like a ship out on the ocean made of stone,
And sometimes when I get lonely, I could swear I hear you call.
Oh, the nights are cold and you don’t keep me warm.

[Chorus:]
And when I first saw you, I first loved you. Here’s the song that I sang to the fire in your eyes,
But somebody told you that it wouldn’t be easy and you carry that lie for the devil to see.

Some sail rivers deep and muddy. Some sail rivers clear and cold,
But the river I’m sailing goes to sea,
And sometimes I do grow weary. Sometimes I feel old,
And sometimes I wonder if you think of me.

[Chorus, repeat 1st verse, & Chorus]
