The new month

When I was a child, today would be the start of the Advent Calendar. You’ve seen them… the decorated Christmas calendars that only go from December 1 to the 24th. Each day, the child gets to open that day’s door. Underneath is a small picture, usually. The 24th’s door is bigger, with usually a picture of the baby Jesus underneath.

It’s the simple date of today that brought this to mind. Meanwhile, I’ve got my menorah ready for Tuesday evening. I need to find some candles that will fit. I know they sell them in proper bunches, but I forget exactly where. What I am looking forward to is the second half of the winter part of the year, when we gain time in light every day. The days in this winter quarter always seem to me to be darker than their counterparts in the other quarter. I could explain this if I knew celestial mechanics better.

I miss math, but the time for mathematics is over for me.
