RNC: the gathering of the … er… forces

Hi back to Michael from Tulsa!

Just have been out to the Oyster Bar at Grand Central for dinner with the brother- and sister-in-law, catching up on the fact that they’re grandparents and I’m a great-aunt (eeeeeeek!) etc. etc.

Walking to there from Times Square, where the Ohio delegation stays, was the usual Manhattan walk, I noticed that it was way more interspersed with NYC’s Finest than it usually is. Three on horseback just by the hotel as we returned (2 of them listening to further instructions via cell phone), and on the way over, about 15 Finest on Foot, two on motorized tricycle bikes, two Police Dept. tow trucks complete with crews, and a few private security people wandering in front of their respective office buildings. The drive-through entrance to our hotel is blocked off with strategically placed cars, barricades, and further security people, but nobody stopped us on our way in.

Outside, a street-hawker sells very hastily printed up tee shirts with “No Wacky Liberals” imprinted upon their fronts. Almost bought one – only $10, but we were in a hurry. I suppose for every one scaling the outside of the Plaza Hotel with protest banners, there’s at least one trying to make money off of us. Gotta love a capitalist society! 🙂

While I will mainly be writing about the Convention, there is still a lot brewing back home in Tulsa politics, which is my usual beat, so bear with me if I deviate into local politics now and then.
